The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a 53-year-old Altha woman who fell out of the cab of a truck late Sunday night.
The fatality was identified as Fe Smiley.
Sheriff Glenn Kimbrel said she was riding in the cab of a 2004 Chevrolet pickup traveling westbound on CR 274.
“We’re still interviewing witnesses to determine who might have been operating the vehicle she fell from,” the sheriff said. A 911 call reporting the incident came in at 10:49 p.m.
According to a brief report from Lt. Jared Nichols, the critically-injured woman was transported to Calhoun-Liberty Hospital, where she later died.
No further information is being released at this time.
Smiley worked at Shelton’s Trucking as a night road call supervisor for several years. “Everybody loved her,” a co-worker said Tuesday. “She was extremely upbeat, never discouraged or disappointed. Everything was positive with her. She was just a very uplifting person.”
A native of Santa Rita, Guam, she is survived by her husband, Stephen Smiley, several children and grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements were not available at press time.
