Community members joined employees of the Department of Corrections for a ribbon cutting ceremony Thursday to open the new South Unit Work Camp on the grounds of Liberty Correctional Institution. Warden Walt Summers said the new facility will hold approximately 450 lower security inmates. He said the structure was built with inmate labor for $7.8 million, resulting in a significant savings for taxpayers, noting that a similar facility built in neighboring Gadsden Co. costs $17 million.
